LATEST TREND IN ONLINE ADVERTISING
Online ads are measured in Pixels. Pixel advertising is the latest in the online advertising industry. It offers a viable option to online webmasters and businesses, to advertise and market their websites online, keeping the ROI (Return on investments) at the highest.
It started with the creative brainwave of a 21-year-old UK university student, Alex Tew, who came up with a type of an internet billboard containing one million pixels. On his website — MillionDollarHomepage.com, Tew offered internet ad space for the client’s image or logo, at $1 per pixel. He recently raked in a million dollars by selling off all the pixels to advertisers, and the page now resembles a digital collage, providing advertising to various organisations.
The idea is simple: Create affordable internet advertising space by selling blocks of pixel (usually 10X10) ads on a high traffic Web site. Then, link those blocks back to the advertiser’s site and create a buzz about the ‘pixel homepage’.
CONSUMERISM
Consumerism is a term used to describe the effects of equating personal happiness with purchasing material possessions and consumption
Popular media used “Consumerist” as a short-form for “Consumer-Activist”. Webster’s dictionary added “the promotion of the consumer’s interests” alongside “the theory that an increasing consumption of goods is economically desirable” under “Consumerism”.
AUDIO VISUAL MEDIA AND CONSUMERSIM- ISSUES
Consumerism is the myth that the individual will be gratified and integrated by consuming. The public fetishistically substitutes consumer ideals for the lost acculturating experiences of art, religion and family. The consumer sublimates the desire for cultural fulfillment to the rewards of buying and owning commodities.
Mass media perpetuates the myth of consumerism as a priority of the New Capitalism. As America settles into its nightly routine of television viewing, corporate profiteers are quick to substitute the lure of material luxury and consumer gratification for the fading spirit. Media advertising sells an image — an empty shell
